The history that Vladimir Putin wished to destroy so badly.
He cannot allow a raucous democracy to flourish next door while his autocratic government remains in shambles. Gobbling up neighbors’ resources is his signature move to keep the Russians in fear and dependent on his fake macho persona.
But his decision to topple Kyiv in three days was greeted with stranded tanks lit up by hand-held javelins. No one would have blamed Zelensky if he had taken western advice to leave Kyiv and run a government from exile. However, Putin would have installed his puppets to obliterate Ukraine and then returned to his drawing board to move on to the next one.
Instead of taking flight, President Zelenskyy chose to stay and fight.
The will to fight against Russian aggression was born at the top of the Ukrainian government. The tenacity of Ukrainians is the reason why the Russians are stuck for more than ten months. The willingness to take hits and keep punching above their weight is the reason why the West still believes in Ukraine.
