Europe’s long-range defense finally rises — but not because of Paris.

Lake Onega lies deep in Russia’s north, close to St. Petersburg — far from Kyiv and just 150 miles from Finland.

Two days ago, Ukraine’s special operations forces struck a Russian Buyan-M small missile ship named Grad on Lake Onega. The vessel was reportedly en route toward the Baltic Sea.

It is highly likely that the strike was carried out by one of Ukraine’s long-range drones, as several other targets in the St. Petersburg region were also hit that same day. Ukraine’s long-range attacks additionally struck the Kirishi oil refinery near the city.

The Buyan-M corvettes are capable of launching Kalibr cruise missiles — the same type used to hit Ukrainian cities. I hope this particular vessel was destroyed by drones launched directly from Ukrainian territory, not by sabotage teams operating inside Russia.

Ukraine has always had the capability to hit such targets, but for a long time resisted striking Russian naval assets beyond the Black Sea. Even this hit occurred inside Russia — but deep in its northern interior. A…
