Before the election even began, Donald Trump promised he would end the war in 24 hours. After winning, his incoming team doubled down — pledging a swift breakthrough. When asked how fast “swift” was, the numbers began to slide: first weeks, then 90 days, then 180.

A few days ago, it became: “We’re prepared to walk away.”

In just three months, Team Trump has moved from bluster to bravado to bargaining — and now, to backing off. That’s the full emotional arc of a power fantasy colliding with geopolitical reality. Quite the journey.

There’s very little chance this Easter ceasefire idea originated with Vladimir Putin. All available evidence points elsewhere. A few weeks ago, Finland’s Prime Minister Alexander Stubb paid a visit to the United States and enjoyed a casual round of golf with President Trump at Mar-a-Lago.

Upon returning to Finland, Stubb told reporters he had floated the idea of setting a hard deadline for a ceasefire — arguing it would be a smart move. Why? Because it cuts off Putin’s favorite tactic: delay, delay…
