For a change, I’m relieved that the Ukraine conflict has escaped the sensationalist gaze of Western media. This critical battle for democracy is no longer in the limelight, overshadowed by other pressing issues that demand their unwavering attention.

In a way, this shift has its benefits. Had the media spotlight continued to shine intensely on Ukraine, they might have overly dramatized Ukraine’s strategic establishment of a bridgehead on the Dnipro river’s eastern banks.

“Ukrainian officials stated that Ukrainian forces have established bridgeheads on the east (left) bank of Kherson Oblast and are conducting ground operations aimed at pushing Russian forces out of artillery range of the west (right) bank of the Dnipro River. The Ukrainian Marine Corps Command and the Ukrainian General Staff stated on November 17 that Ukrainian marines have secured several “bridgeheads” on the east bank following successful actions and are conducting actions to expand these positions,” the Institute of Study of War reported yesterday.

Alright, let’s first get a handle on what a bridgehead actually is, and then tweak that definition to suit the current situation. After that, we can dive into how Ukraine’s operations across the Dnipro are shaking things up.

What is a bridgehead?

  • A bridgehead in military terms refers to an area of land at the end of a bridge closest to the enemy’s position that has been secured by an armed force.
  • This area serves as a defensive position and a staging point for further advance into enemy territory.
  • The primary objectives of establishing a bridgehead are to ensure control over a critical crossing point (like a bridge or river crossing) and to create a secure area from which troops can launch offensive operations.

Securing a bridgehead is often a crucial operation, especially in situations where crossing a river or other significant geographical barrier is necessary for advancing into enemy territory. The concept is not just limited to actual bridges; it can also refer to any strategic location that serves as a foothold for further operations.
