When Donald Trump wants to stop the media from talking about exploding COVID cases, he stirs up a controversy by talking about Hydroxychloroquine. He spices the story up by saying he is taking the pill.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk stirs up a controversy by indirectly supporting Russia’s land grab in order to distract the media from analyzing Tesla’s sub-par third quarter performance. He did not want anyone to write about the billions he lost due to Tesla’s plunging stock price.
By talking about a nuclear strike, Vladimir Putin wanted to distract our eyes from his army’s spiraling losses in Ukraine.
This is a classic example of the divert and exploit strategy used by three narcissists. When engagement drives more engagement, a negative story can be replaced by a controversy that shifts attention in a completely different direction.
These narcissists don’t care how many people die or how many people are affected by their actions.
It’s all about what’s in it for me.
