I ran through one too many rabbit holes to find out who coined the term ‘fourth estate.’ Most of the historical fingers point towards Edmund Burke, an 18th-century Irish politician, who spent most of his time in Great Britain. But that did not make any sense because I have always associated the term ‘fourth estate’ with the French Revolution. I assumed that it was the French who brought that about.
In the context of the French Revolution, the press played a crucial role in disseminating revolutionary ideas and shaping public opinion. The term “fourth estate” came to symbolize the press as an influential and independent force that could influence political affairs. It looks like Burke coined it, and the French gave it life.
The humans, our civilization understood the importance and the value offered by the media, even at the time when they did not exist as an industry. Using the word “importance” feels a bit wrong to describe the media because light is not an important piece of our life puzzle. Remove it, we will plunge into darkness first, build countermeasures to survive but we will eventually fail because without light the world will only have very little time to live.
