Putin’s army is not waging a war to win. They did not cross the border into Ukraine to exterminate the non-existent Nazi’s. They are not hunting for security guarantees.

They are using their power to inflict pain. And they are planning to use that pain to gain leverage.

The Russian army is sick.

Top down.

It is wrong to call them a professional army

Wars are inherently cruel. The pain, the hurt and the damage two warring sides inflict on each other can permanently scar anyone who participated in the war and anyone who gets caught in the crossfire.

Children who get separated from their parents and those who become orphaned due to the war have to accept trauma as a part of their psyche. Exploiting the vulnerable is what the Russian army does best.

For Putin and his cronies the forcibly adopted children are a major part of their off-ramp from the war. It is part cleansing of the Ukrainian identity and part leverage during the negotiations.
