The Russian Army knows it cannot win. The solitary victory it earned in Bakhmut after spending nearly a year and expending tens of thousands of lives is the consequence of Ukraine not committing any of its newly acquired offensive brigades.

Twelve Months. Twenty thousand lives. Unknown casualties. And yet, it was Wagner’s army of convicts that won Bakhmut.

What options do you have when you cannot win tiny little ghost towns after recruiting 300,000 men against the opponent’s second tier team? (second tier by offensive power)

This is when you transition from fighting to win to stopping the other side from winning. Russia’s desperate defensive fortifications in Ukraine demonstrate how scared Putin’s army is of facing Ukrainian counter-offensive brigades.

It is extremely unlikely that the Russians will be able to hold the Ukrainian army for a long period. Russia needs to defend hundreds of miles. Ukraine only needs to breach a few hundred square feet here or there.

The Russian commanders understand the difficulty of the task at hand. As a result, they have resorted to one of the worst weapons in their arsenal:

Landmines
