When Atlantic’s Barton Gellman wrote “The Election That Could Break America” in September last year, the initial response from the media was a bit all over the place.

Some laughed. Some ridiculed. Some, including me, froze.

Gellman was prescient:

“If Democrats win back the Senate and hold the House, then all roads laid out in the Electoral Count Act lead eventually to a Biden presidency. The reverse applies if Republicans hold the Senate and unexpectedly win back the House,” he wrote.

We escaped the bed with the devil, but we almost climbed into it. It was Gellman who rang the 3 a.m. alarm at the right time. His research, the permutations, and the combinations he laid out slashed the operating space for the coup organizers ahead of the November 3rd election.

They were still at it, as it was evidenced in the days leading up to the insurrection. But since Gellman outed their plan way too early, life became a tad bit difficult for over-the-ground operators.

In America, the president reigns for four years, and journalism governs forever and ever.— Oscar Wilde
