Russia Suffers Massive Losses in Avdiivka
Putin claims it is “active defense” not active offense
The Russian army’s most extensive counter-attack of 2023 fizzled out within a mere five days. There remains a slight uncertainty about their ultimate objectives for this offensive in Avdiivka, leaving open the possibility that they could persist in accruing further losses.
As of October 16th, the initial phase of the Russian counterattack on Avdiivka has proven unsuccessful. In warfare, whether examining the multitude of smaller engagements that collectively shape a conflict or viewing the battle as a single event, the first 100 hours hold paramount significance. This critical timeframe serves as the linchpin, as once it has elapsed, victory remains possible but the likelihood of a protracted stalemate, a grueling war of attrition, or even outright defeat escalates for the aggressor.
Russia “lost more than 300 pieces of military equipment and 3000 personnel since intensifying offensive operations in the area on October 9,” wrote ISW. The Russian military blogging community, a highly vocal group of bloggers who ardently back Putin’s wartime initiatives, displayed remarkable unity during this period. They made concerted efforts to bolster the Russian army, frequently exaggerating its achievements in the sector.
