This Russian army has no idea how to execute mobile defense. They need trench lines, fortifications, and minefields to hide behind. Only then do they have a chance to defend. On an open field, they are sitting ducks.

Mobile defense is not rocket science, but given the existing structure of the Russian armed forces, where disciplinary troops are needed in the rear to hold the troops at the front, any talk about mobile defense seems futile.

The Russian frontline near Vovchansk has been surrounded by Ukraine from multiple directions(above image). The Russian forces are trapped in a pocket, and anything they move into that pocket will face Ukrainian artillery and drones from multiple directions.

The Russians have probably concluded that their northeast frontline is unstable and cannot hold for long. They keep pouring more resources into the Vovchansk pocket to buy time for their engineering units to build fortifications behind Vovchansk. There are some fortifications on their side of the border, but they want to build more inside the Ukrainian border.
