President Volodymyr Zelensky’s five-year term ends in few months
Volodymr Zelensky, Ukraine’s President, is supposed to wrap up his term next year. Currently, Ukraine is in a state of martial law, which was put into action right after the Russian invasion began.
“As long as martial law lasts, no elections can be held, which in practice means freezing the balance of political forces,” says the Institute of Central Europe.
Simply put, the President of Ukraine wields substantial authority to address external threats and govern the nation as he sees fit. In the absence of war and martial law, Ukraine’s scheduled elections would take place on March 31, 2024.
Time certainly passes quickly. It’s been four years since Zelensky assumed office on March 31, 2019.
Regarding elections in Ukraine, the president holds all the cards. If he deems it impractical given the ongoing war that claims hundreds of lives daily, he can opt to decline. He might argue that we lack the time, resources, and energy to spare. He can argue that his focus remains on confronting the imminent threat that seeks to obliterate Ukraine.
