Toxic Conservatism Ruins Britain
The Tales of a Dumpster Fire
Four years ago, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez accused Catalan separatists of lying. The tone of his scathing rebuke in parliament was uncharacteristically sharp.
He reminded Spaniards, “It is necessary to remember that Brexit was based on a grotesque campaign of lies and unprecedented misinformation”. The Catalan separatists, Sanchez added, “only have lies to support their political positions.”
Trump and his allies are among the best liars in the business, but they cannot match the level at which a group of power hungry politicians deceived Brits into believing a disaster was actually good for them.
Brexit was anchored by lies, delivered by stoking hate and driven by fear. Modern conservative movements in the world are based on lies, hate, and fear.
“The lies told before the referendum by the leaders of the Brexit campaigns — the £350 million for the NHS; that there were no downsides to Brexit; that the trade deal the UK would conclude with the EU would be the easiest in human history — have been well documented”.
Dominic Cummings, the man who led the Brexit campaign, said last year that “no-one on earth knows answer if Brexit is a good idea”.
