There are many kinds of system men politicians depend on.
The quiet. The tireless. The strong. The unassuming. The one who avoids the spotlight. The one who can thrive in it. The one with breadth. The one with depth. The contradictions pile up — and somehow, Trump lucked into someone who fit the entire profile. In the one domain where nothing had ever worked for him.
James Mattis. H.R. McMaster. John Kelly. Mark Milley. Michael Flynn. And others. All decorated. All difficult fits. Trump never mixed well with the military brass — until, suddenly, he did.
So when Trump said he would give Russian President Vladimir Putin 50 days before triggering sanctions, many heard weakness. A license. A stall. But I heard something else entirely: the echo of March 2025, when Iran was told it had 60 days to strike a deal or face consequences.
