Republicans expected a blowout win in the midterms. There was talk of a red wave. Florida Senator Rick Scott promised a bloodbath for the Democrats. Kevin McCarthy was so certain that the GOP would win the midterms that he started acting as if he already was speaker.

The fundamentals did favor the GOP.

What was there for the party to not like about the 2022 midterms?

An unpopular president, a gerrymandered congressional map, an economy on the verge of a recession, inflation at an all-time high, and Democrats on the backfoot in the final stretch. Even if there wasn’t a wave, the GOP expected a gentle push. Instead, it received a tight slap from Americans.

Republicans almost lost the House and they lost the Senate. They are correct in blaming Donald Trump for their failures in the midterms. But Donald Trump couldn’t have reached that level without the Republican Party humoring him for four years.

Democrats had given the GOP multiple chances to knock off Trump, but the Republicans refused to let go of their tight embrace. Finally, the Democrats appear to have accomplished the task on their own. By releasing Donald Trump’s tax returns they have hammered three key brand positions…
