When I started collecting information about Ukraine’s multi-pronged attack on Russian assets in Crimea and inside Russia, which happened last night, I had to take a pause. Ukraine knocked out an S-400 battery stationed near the Russian naval base in Sevastopol and also sank Russia’s Kilo-class submarine Rostov-on-Don, worth $300 million. The extent of the damage to the S-400 battery remains unclear, but four launchers were hit.
If four launchers were hit, the odds are pretty good that several other systems in the vicinity were also knocked out. Depending on its size, the S-400 system could easily push the total cost closer to a billion dollars.
