Ukraine’s Dnipro Gauntlet to the Russian Army

Incredibly difficult but impressively tactical

I’m all for bad news, especially the kind that gets those Russian military bloggers all riled up. I haven’t seen their disappointment hit this level in ages. Even when Russia took heavy hits in personnel and vehicles in Avdiivka, they still found something to cheer about. Some are still swearing that victory is reachable in Avdiivka.

But if you shift your focus just a tad west from Avdiivka to check out Kherson, things look quite different for them. The following text is from one of the prominent Russian military bloggers:

“In the Kherson direction, Russian military personnel tried several times to dislodge the enemy from Krynky on the left bank of the Dnipro. They managed to achieve some success, but the Ukrainian Armed Forces still maintain a foothold in the center of the village. Now fierce fighting continues in the area, and UAV’s are actively operating. In addition, the enemy maintains a bridgehead at the railway bridge to the west.”

Multiple sources, including ISW, have now confirmed Ukraine’s robust presence on the opposite side of the Dnipro River. While Ukraine has been conducting raids on the eastern banks of the Dnipro against Russian positions for months, what sets this apart from previous raids is the utilization of armored vehicles for these attacks.

Ukraine is currently transporting troops and vehicles to engage the Russians on the opposing side of the river.

According to a recent assessment by ISW, “Ukrainian forces likely conducted initial company-sized assaults across the Dnipro River onto the east (left) bank of Kherson Oblast on October 17 and 18. The reported battalion-size Ukrainian force grouping on the east bank suggests that heavy Russian interdiction efforts along the Dnipro River have not prevented Ukrainian forces from transferring additional personnel and materiel to positions on the east bank”.

Why should we care about this?
