UN Commission: Russian soldiers raped and committed sexual violence
Against women of ages ranging from 19 to 83 years
The New York Times recently published an article with a headline that screamed, “Russian forces tortured some Ukrainians to death.” It’s a stark reminder that Putin does not value human life, not even the lives of Russians. If he did, he would not have initiated a war that he cannot possibly win.
But why the need to torture people to death?
It’s a question that has haunted humanity for centuries, and yet, there are no clear answers as to why, how, and when the dark side of human nature emerges.
Power without accountability can lead down a dark path, and some armies, particularly those led by dictators, often find solace in that darkness. For them, accountability is defined solely by the dictator and the dictator’s underlings. They serve as the nations judge, jury, and the executioner.
The Russian army is an exceptionally unique case. It’s an army that strategically targeted aid workers and their vehicles as they rushed to help civilians trapped under buildings bombed by the Russian air force in Aleppo, Syria.
Kill the helpers. Destroy hope.
