Why Did Ukraine’s Top Commander Say the War Has Hit a ‘Stalemate’
Gen. Valery Zaluzhny said no “beautiful breakthrough” was imminent
I harbored a dislike for U.S. General Mark Milley for some time, especially during the initial stages of the Russian invasion. His comments, often at odds with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s views, felt a little bit difficult for me to reconcile. I didn’t think General Milley was pushing us to face the other side of the coin; rather, it felt like he was on the opposing side.
However, over the course of the year and a half of the war, anyone’s true nature is challenging to conceal. General Milley’s comments may sting for a prolonged period, but I’ve learned to respect his words because he consistently readies us to face the worst. He places us in the most uncomfortable spot and challenges us to find a way out.
Even Western politicians and the Ukrainian President Zelensky’s office seem somewhat peeved with General Valery Zaluzhny, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, over his comments to The Economist.
